Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification
I spent my Saturday getting certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid, which is immediate intervention for youth in crisis. As an educator I feel like it’s so important to be able to recognize the signs of a mental health crisis and be aware of the resources available in our community. This training was like the counseling version of CPR, that is, what you do until the professionals arrive on scene.
The training outlines a non-linear action plan that follows the acronym ALGEE, which stands for:
A: Assess for risk of suicide or harm
L: Listen without judgement
G: Give reassurance and information
E: Encourage professional help
E: Encourage other supportive strategies
So many of my students share that they struggle with anxiety and depression. As a result of this training I feel more confident in the support I can offer.
Side Note: I can’t remember the last time I sat in a classroom for 8 hours straight! I realized that doodling is one of my go-to concentrating practices for staying present and staying off my phone! 📝
