Feedback as a Conversation

Feedback is my thing.

It’s how I build relationships. More so than the delivery of any content, how I engage with my students on the things THEY create is what leads to meaningful transformation.

Feedback, at its best, is a formative conversation.

Rather than the final judgement inherent in a grade, feedback is an invitation to try again, but armed with more knowledge.

Over the past few years I’ve developed an effective technique for delivering video feedback on student projects. I employ screencast technology to capture my MacBook screen, while simultaneously recording comments about specific aspects of the student work I am reviewing.

During this process, I walk-through all student submissions in a single video, which sometimes takes upward of 2 hours! In the critique, I offer positive, productive feedback on how students can evolve their work to its next best iteration. Because feedback is given to the entire class, students are inspired by each other’s choices and learn from each other’s mistakes.

So honored to be featured in an upcoming Full Sail spot highlighting my take on feedback and why it’s at the heart of my approach as an educator.

Thanks to my friends at Platinum Creative for capturing this scene.
