Good Grief

Grief is a universal experience, yet we each feel it so uniquely. It comes in many forms, whenever it wants, often when we think we’re doing just fine.

People say well-meaning, but insensitive things when we’re sad. Grief makes people uncomfortable because it is inevitable. You can’t just live a good life, eat right, exercise, and escape the experience. That makes people nervous.

A few years back I met a woman determined to reframe the conversation around grief with the revolutionary idea that it’s OK to not be OK.

I first heard Megan Devine speak at a conference when I was deep in grief after a traumatic loss. I needed her understanding and the support she and her organization, Refuge in Grief, were offering.

Fast forward a couple of years and it was me providing design support to Megan. In conjunction with the launch of her new book - It’s OK That You’re Not OK - Megan needed branded collateral in the form of infographics, posters, and a speaker one sheet.

Through this connection, MCBS alum Astha Shrestha was later able to collaborate with Megan to create the animated support video “How To Help A Grieving Friend.” The video has been widely shared and now has over 2 million views.

I post this now as we head into what can feel like a heavy holiday season, but also for a few students whose grieving hearts are on my mind.

It’s OK that you’re not OK.
