Don't Rush Challenge

When Portfolio Play Date v5 rolled around, I was fresh out of ideas. So instead of attempting to cover that up with a lackluster activity, I brought my empty, but open mind to class and asked the students what they wanted to do.

Inspired by the “Don’t Rush” Makeup Brush Challenge, they decided we would attempt to re-create our own version using the magic of the virtual background feature in Zoom. “Attempt” being the operative word.

We only had 3 hours to come to a consensus on a unified theme and approach that would seamlessly transition the footage from one segment to the next. With an agreed upon plan, we still needed to test the mechanics of recording in Zoom and collectively coach each other through the awkwardness of our individual takes.

There were so many details to pay attention to and issues to troubleshoot - from the position of our hands to the timing of our movements. Keep in mind, there were 30+ students on the call, from 7 different courses, across 4 Full Sail degree programs.

One student stepped up to test various elements of the recording and another jumped into the role of virtual director, supporting each of us when it was our time to shine.

Oh how we laughed y’all!

At the end of the session we had a shotty, low res, 3 hour Zoom recording that still needed to be edited, but we also had that sense of togetherness we’d all been longing for.

If that was the end of the story, it would be a happy one.

Even if the above product never came to fruition, even if the raw footage sat in a folder untouched forever, the process was gold.

But only a few hours later, another student who wasn’t even in the session, picked up the footage and dropped this edit on us. Elation!

I’ll never forget this day and what it felt like to push the boundaries of how we create and connect in this community.
